FLYING FISH
Exhibition Developer January 20203-August 2025
Remote
I worked with clients and our small team of developers to create traveling exhibitions for museums from ideation to installation. I specialized in exhibitions with a science focus, and worked on eight exhibitions while at Flying Fish with topics from the origins of the universe to underwater archaeology. I also developed and led the Climate Action Collective at Flying Fish, which works towards planetary health within the traveling exhibition industry.
Within my exhibition development work I was involved at each part of the process. I especially loved the ideation phases of projects where we were exploring big ideas and organizing topics into a flow that feels good for visitors.
In my role I:
- Researched exhibition topics
- Developed exhibition narratives
- Brainstormed and created exhibition flow, structure, narrative, and learning outcomes
- Created interpretive outlines and narratives
-Wrote interpretive signage
-Collaborated with clients, designers and fabricators
-Met visitor needs and accessibility standards
-Worked with content experts
-Identified and procured props, artifacts, and digital assets
-Developed and storyboarded interactives and media
-Reviewed and edited script, including language translations
-Documented and organized exhibition materials
Below are examples of a few of the projects I worked on at Flying Fish.
Mysteries From the Deep: Exploring Underwater Archaeology
This was my favorite exhibition at Flying Fish! I had the privilege of working with underwater archaeologists and content experts to bring this exhibition to life. Exploring the process of underwater archaeology from start to finish, this exhibition showcases the field by highlighting underwater sites from around the world and bringing them to life through hands-on interactives, expert interviews, artifacts, props, and interpretive panels. I was the development lead on this project, researching, writing interpretive panels, storyboarding media, working closely with our designer and fabricators, securing artifact loans, researching and procuring images and media assets, managing partnerships and collaborations with content experts, documenting the exhibition, and helping install the exhibition at it's premier venue at the Intrepid Museum in NYC.
Artemis Adventure
Artemis Adventures takes visitors on a journey to the moon and beyond, engaging visitors in play-based learning with LEGO. The visitor journey walks them through the stages of NASA's Artemis missions to the moon with a series of LEGO models and LEGO based interactives. I focused more on the interactives in this exhibition, designing them to highlight the iterative and creative nature of engineering in STEAM fields.
Stardust: The Universe in You
This space-based exhibition takes visitors through time from the Big Bang to the present, telling the story of the origin of the universe while highlighting the interconnected nature of life here on Earth and throughout the universe. Geared towards young learners, this exhibition simplifies complex topics like star formation, supernovas, dark matter, and the Big Bang. For this exhibition, I focused on script writing and media.
Mission Astronaut
Mission: Astronaut launches visitors into space to explore astronaut life on a space station. From sleeping in space to prepping a meal in zero gravity, this exhibition answers all the questions about living in space while diving into important research being done to help save lives and the health of our planet. With this exhibition, I focused more on interactives, media, and digital assets.
OceanXperience
Ever wanted to be part of the discoveries made on high-tech ocean research vessels? In this exhibition, visitors embark on a research journey of their choice, studying different ocean animal behaviors and patterns while moving through different parts of a research vessel from a wet lab to the bridge. Much of the content covers ocean health, our impact on it, and what we can do to take action. With this exhibition, I wrote some of the content, reviewed and developed interactives, created a hands-on engineering lab for visitors, and procured props and objects.
Climate Action Collective
In addition to my exhibition work at Flying Fish, I developed and led the Climate Action Collective (CAC). The CAC is a small group of Flying Fish staff taking action on planetary health within the company. We established yearly goals which include internal climate action and education, operations changes, and sustainable material goals for exhibitions. We also joined Seeding Action, an ASTC group made up of museums that are also taking sustainability actions.
